Individual Therapy in Washington, DC | Cara Curcio, LICSW
Therapy can be a place to slow down and understand patterns that may be difficult to see on your own. You may be functioning well on the outside while feeling anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck.
I offer warm, collaborative individual psychotherapy for adolescents and adults.
Together, we explore what is happening in your life now while considering how past experiences, relationships, and broader social and cultural contexts may continue to shape the way you understand yourself and relate to others.

My approach to individual therapy
I have extensive post-graduate training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and approach therapy as a collaborative process. I am interested not only in relieving symptoms, but in understanding what may be underneath them and finding new ways for you to navigate life.
In our work, we may explore:
-
patterns in your relationships
-
attachment and early experiences
-
anxiety, depression, and self-criticism
-
trauma and long-standing patterns
-
identity, gender, and sexuality
-
difficult life transitions
-
experiences of disconnection or feeling stuck
-
the ways your environment and relationships have shaped your experiences
My goal is to help you develop greater insight into your experiences and find new ways of relating to yourself and others.
What is therapy like?
I view the therapeutic relationship as fundamental to the work. I strive to create a thoughtful, supportive environment where you can speak openly and explore whatever feels important to you.
Sessions are 50 minutes, and we work together to determine the frequency that best fits your needs and goals. More frequent sessions may be helpful for deeper trauma work.
I draw primarily from a psychodynamic approach, while incorporating evidence-based approaches and mindfulness or somatic awareness when helpful.
Who I work with
I work with adolescents and adults with a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, identity and sexuality, life transitions, and addictive behaviors.
I also have particular experience working with LGBTQ+ and transgender clients and provide an affirming space to explore gender, sexuality, and identity.
Fees & insurance
Individual sessions are $200 for 50 minutes. I offer some sliding-scale availability.
I am an out-of-network provider and do not accept insurance directly. I provide a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. I recommend checking with your insurer about your out-of-network benefits.
Start with a consultation
